Data compression A process for reducing the amount of data transmitted. This enables

higher throughput to be achieved in the same transmission time. Ex-

amples of this technique include STAC, VJHC and MPPC.

Data Link Layer (DLL)

Data packet A data packet is used for information transfer. Each data packet

contains a prescribed number of characters (information and control

characters).

Data transmission

The data transmission rate specifies the number of information units

for each time interval transferred between sender and recipient.

Datagram A self-contained data packet that is forwarded in the network with

minimum protocol overhead and without an acknowledgement

mechanism.
